1956 is the arrival of the first reimagined superhero: Barry Allen. Whereas other Silver Age heroes were either brand new or continuations, the new Flash took over the name from Jay Garrick, making his first appearance in Showcase #4.

DC loses another competitor to the Comics Code Authority: Quality Comics. The company sells its remaining superhero properties to DC, who continues to publish only four of its titles: Blackhawk (Volume 1), G.I. Combat (Volume 1), Heart Throbs (Volume 1) and Robin Hood Tales (Volume 1).
