1963 is a year of competition. National Periodicals purchases two romance titles, Young Love (Volume 1) and Young Romance (Volume 1), from Prize Comics. However, sales lag behind the new competitor, Marvel Comics. Writer-editor Stan Lee had jumped on the Silver Age bandwagon. In a span of two years, popular heroes like Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Doctor Strange and Spider-Man outsold DC. The only new creation that proved popular was the Doom Patrol by Arnold Drake, adding a more Marvel-like character-driven title appealing to a slightly older audience.
