2017 sees the culmination of Scott Snyder's run on Batman with the introduction of the Dark Multiverse in Dark Nights: Metal. This negative multiverse features excesses of heroes (but mostly, Batman) and What If? scenarios that sees massive expansion the following years.

Injustice 2 follows the critically acclaimed fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us from 2013, continuing the narrative of pitting hero against hero, and keeping the same game mechanics, but expanding the roster.

The DC Extended Universe expands with two movies. Wonder Woman sees Gal Gadot take the spotlight in the title role, reprising her role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Justice League follows later in the year, but the production is troubled by editorial interference even before director Zack Snyder steps away for personal reasons, to be replaced with Joss Whedon. While Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman gained mostly positive reviews after the poorly received Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, Justice League was heavily panned by critics, audiences and cast members, who laid most of the blame on Joss Whedon, whose tone and humor stood in stark contrast with Snyder's vision.
