Abin Sur was a Green Lantern of Sector 2814, the predecessor of Hal Jordan.

Abin Sur was the first Green Lantern to welcome Sinestro into the Corps. Sinestro, wanted to use his new powers to get revenge on the people that drew his planet into war, but Abin helped him see that the Green Lanterns fight for justice, not revenge.[1]

After stopping an alien smuggler, Abin Sur had to retreive a cargo that drifted away and landed on Earth. Dubbing it a primitive, backwater planet, Abin's orders were to operate without leaving any evidence of alien life forms. Abin followed the trail of the device to the desert of New Mexico, where he realized the cargo was a Mechivore: a techno-organic virus that grows as it feeds metal. The machine, taking parts of nearby military vehicles in a scrapyard, attacks the nearby soldier Amanda Waller, who was a private at the time. Instead of interfering and blowing away his cover, Abin Sur watched from a distance as the human soldier was capable of standing against the alien machine and destroy it. Abin then took all evidence of the alien's existence -namely the entire scrapyard- and threw it at the sun. Despite the primitive and violent nature of humans, Abin saw great potential on Earth's inhabitants.[2]

Death

Abin Sur defeated the fear-essence being Parallax and imprisoned him in the Lost Sector (Sector 666) on the ruined planet Ryut. However, years later, Parallax escaped from his prison.

Six months later, after killing four Green Lanterns and destroying two planets, Parallax attacked Sector 2814 and mortally wounded Abin Sur, who was forced to crash-land on the nearest inhabited planet - Earth. The dying Abin Sur commanded his ring to find a worthy successor among the humans.

Ferris Aircraft test pilot Hal Jordan was chosen by the ring and transported to the crash site, where Abin Sur appointed him a Green Lantern before passing away. Hal buried his body before being picked up by his friend Thomas Kalmaku.

However, Sur's body was found by the government and examined by Hector Hammond. Some of remnants of Parallax's DNA in Sur's wounds infected doctor Hammond, gifting him with superhuman powers. It is unknown what happened to Sur's corpse after the autopsy.[3]
