Sun-Boy and Lightning Lad are recuperating in the hospital after sustaining injuries on a mission. Later, the Legion has a meeting where they meet their newest member: Matter-Eater Lad, a boy who can eat and digest anything.

After a series of missions end in failure, the Legion begins to suspect that there is a traitor in their midst. At the same time the criminal alien known as Meglaro manages to escape from prison. Brainiac 5 builds a device which leads him to the truth: None of the Legion members have turned traitor, but they have been betrayed by Dr. Landro. Using a device, the Legion learns that Landro put a shrunken spy in the "curative capsule" which was implanted in Sun-Boy's leg, and that's how mission secrets were revealed to the enemy. With the spy plot revealed, Superboy is dispatched to defeat and recapture Meglaro, and the other Legion members work to remove the capsule from Sun-Boy's ankle and capture the spy.

Synopsis for Sandman: "The Villain from Valhalla!"

This story is reprinted from Adventure Comics #75.

One night in New York City, a Viking longship glides into a docking slip and ties up. A barbaric, red-bearded, giant figure emerges and stalks down the pier. When accosted by a police watchman, the murderous giant smashes his skull with a large heavy hammer. He strolls down Broadway, finds a bank, and smashes his way into it with his extremely powerful electrical hammer, then begins to loot it. More police arrive, shooting ensues, bullets bounce right off of this brute! On his way out of town he destroys a police car, by flinging his hammer straight through it, then he boards his longship and sails away, laughing uproariously.

That evening the Sandman and Sandy take to the rooftops to travel undetected to the waterfront. Thor has already returned, and is easily winning a melee against a squad of cops. He's throwing them around one-handed, when Sandman charges into him! "Thor" is knocked down, but the Sandman has knocked himself out! Sandy charges in and is taken out with one kick.

Minutes later the Sandman regains consciousness, but Sandy is still out. Ambulances arrive and carry Sandy, and a number of policemen, to City Hospital. Plenty of able-bodied cops are now on the scene, and Sandman rallies them up to immediately pursue this Norseman and his raiders, no heavier weapons, no reinforcements, no nothing, let's go. They go!

Casting off and setting sail in his longship, the giant divests himself of his effective but very uncomfortable, transparent, bulletproof suit, and his crew has already done the same. This turns out to be premature, as Sandman leads a charge of cops down the pier. The fake vikings pick up their weapons and pile over the side to fight the cops on the pier. A fleet of police motorcycles and riot cars sweeps onto the scene, and a desperate battle is waged on the piers of New York City! At the center of it, the Sandman punches the daylights out of the fake thunder god, then drags him out of the melee by his ankles. The arresting officers identify "Thor" as Fairy-Tales Fenton, a metallurgist turned criminal. Fenton spends the next few months in a hospital bed with his limbs in traction.

Shortly thereafter, Saturn Girl is elected to be the official leader of the Legion of Super-Heroes.

Shortly thereafter, Saturn Girl becomes a strict and cruel leader, "punishing" Legion members for being unable to follow her orders. As punishment she would "ground" members from the Legion and use a device that would steal their powers and give them to Saturn Girl. When the threat of Zaryan is on it's way, Saturn Girl heads out on her own to tackle Zaryan's menace by herself. However, Lightning Lad intercepts the rocket first and is blasted with a ray while he destroy Zaryan's rocket.

Fatally wounded, Lightning Lad explains to Saturn Girl, that when she found the message from Zaryan, she was unknowingly watched by Mon-El in the Phantom Zone, who told Lightning Lad of her plan to sacrifice herself so none of the other Legion members were killed. Lightning Lad, learning the truth decided to sacrifice himself so that Saturn Girl may live.
