Synopsis for "Tragedy: The Death of Lightning Lad"

Lightning Lad has been killed in action, and all Legionnaires, including reserve members, attend his funeral. Saturn Girl is greatly upset because Garth risked his life to save hers.

R.J. Brande is also heart-broken because of the death of a kid whom he loved like his own son, and throws his weight around to force the United Planets council to let the Legion stop Zaryan. Phantom Girl, Colossal Boy, Star Boy and Sun Boy storm the planetoid Zaryan used as a launching pad to attack Earth. Meanwhile, remnants of Zaryan's fleet are hiding several dozens of parsecs away while pondering on their next move. Unfortunately for them, it's too late: they've already been found by Superboy, Supergirl and Ultra Boy. While the three teen heroes happily tear the whole fleet up, Supergirl recalls they were supposed to keep those cruisers contained and then calling in the Science Police. Her male partners don't care.

As sending Mon-El back to the Phantom Zone, Brainiac 5 expresses regret at his teammates' inability to ask him help. The Naltorians sent a message, warning one of their seers had foreseen a Legionnaire would die stopping Zaryan's attempt to invade Earth. Saturn Girl read their message and came up with a plan to ensure she would be the one to die. Except that Mon-El found out about it and warned Lightning Lad. Garth quickly headed out to fight the Zaryan fleet and saved Saturn Girl at his own life's expense.

Imra feels she's failed everyone and is ready to turn her ring and her uniform in. Cosmic Boy turns her resignation down, and asks her to stay and keep leading the team after taking a few days off. Rokk reminds her they're still human, which means making mistakes and learning from them.

After spending several days meditating in Titan, Imra is ready to go back. She knows her place is with the Legion, and if there's a way to restore Garth, they'll find it.

Notes

Trivia

  • In this issue, Saturn Girl is mistakenly identified as Imra Ardeen-Ranzz. She and Lightning Lad aren't married during the time this is set.
  • In Supergirl Annual (Volume 5) #2, Brainiac-5 was opposed to Superboy coming to the future while Supergirl was staying in the 30th Century. Still in this issue, both cousins appear and go on a mission together.
