Synopsis for Hourman: "The Little Men Who Weren't There"

A trio of dwarfish gray-skinned bank robbers in all-gray elf outfits, speaking in rhyme, armed with deadly gas guns, commit a murderous mid-day stick up at a downtown bank, in which a teller and a guard are slain. A bubble appears in the lobby with a warning: police are on the way! The robbers collapse themselves into small misty clouds and float their way out the front door. Bullets shot at these clouds melt. The little gray puffs, nearly invisible, are sucked into a waiting sedan thru a large upright pipe, and the car speeds away.

Later at a meeting of Rex Tyler's science club, the president, Dr. Orr, denounces the whole "little men" story a hoax. Young Rex proposes forming a committee to investigate the matter but is rebuffed. A disgraced former member, Dr. Iker, bursts into the room, and also calls for investigation. Harsh words are exchanged, and Iker skulks away muttering ominously.

After the meeting, Rex forms a suspicion, changes clothes, and swallows a Miraclo pill, then sprints along after Dr. Orr's car as he drives out into the country. Orr stops his car when he sees a little gray man lying in the road ahead; this turns out to be an ambush, and Orr is almost kidnapped by the trio. Hourman intervenes, with mixed results: the little men seem to be made of unhurtable rubber, but are easily tossed aside. Watching from the trees nearby, Dr. Iker decides to "bring Normo into being" and soon a gray-skinned, gray-clothed giant stomps in, to fight Hourman. Hourman knocks him down once, but the giant soon chokes him unconscious.

The bubble from the earlier robbery appears, with new instructions, and soon Hourman has been placed in Orr's car, which has been set sideways in the road, and Dr. Orr has been taken away. While Hourman is regaining his senses a speeding police car races around the curve and smashes into Orr's car, flinging Hourman some distance. Two state troopers gets out of the car and try to arrest Hourman, who leaves them handcuffed to each other and attached to their patrol car. In their short conversation, one had given a clue about an old sedan going down Black's Road, so Hourman sprints off in that direction. Along the way his dose of Miraclo wears off, he simply takes another tablet and presses on.

Inside the cabin, Orr and Iker are arguing. Hourman charges in and rescues Orr, as Iker picks up a weird machine and tries to escape. Hourman flings Normo into Iker, smashing his machine, which destroys the four unworldly creatures. The already-insane Dr. Iker now goes completely mad.

Notes

  • Hourman:
    • At this point in his career, Rex is still ingesting Miraclo in pill form. This would later change to a radiation treatment.
    • In this story, he takes a new dose right after his first dose wears off, with no ill effects.
    • Dr. Orr's explanation of Dr. Iker's work: "But his mad genius created a special composition in the FIFTH DIMENSION! His ultra-sensory ray made them of cloud-like spidery texture! Only thru infra-red glasses could they be seen! He might have controlled the world if you hadn't stopped him!"
  • Starman: "The Mystery of the Men with the Staring Eyes!" is reprinted in The Golden Age Starman Archives Vol. 1
