Synopsis for The Sandman: "The Case of the Giant Bees"

While driving, Wes Dodds encounters a giant bumblebee that is bigger than he is. After he kills the bee with his wirepoon, it shrinks back to normal size. A teenaged boy in a costume like that of the Sandman then approaches and explains that the bee was created, using a super-thyroid extract, by a man named Buttsford.

The boy, Sandy, leads the Sandman to Bess Buttsford who explains that the giant bees were created by her father. He wanted the giant bees to produce large quantities of honey, but instead they became dangerous to humans. Buttsford is now being held inside the bee hive. The Sandman is joined by Sandy in a rescue attempt. Sandy is able to jump on the back of one of the bees to distract them long enough for the Sandman to free Buttsford. The humans then escape the hive and seal the entrance behind them. After the bees are killed with carbon dioxide, the Sandman offers to make Sandy his partner.

  • The Sandman dons a new costume this issue.
  • This story features the first meeting between Sandman and Sandy the Golden Boy.
  • Sandy's last name is not given in this story. It was first revealed to be McGann in Adventure Comics #71, but beginning in Adventure Comics #72, his last name was given as Hawkins.
