History
Alan Armstrong was a renowned adventurer known as the Spy Smasher. His amazing exploits were world-famous during the Second World War. He was good friends with the superhero Bulletman after the latter saved him from being brainwashed by the Mask. Immediately following the war, Spy Smasher briefly changed his name to Crime Smasher until he finally retired.

- Spy Smasher first appeared in Earth-S continuity in Fawcett Publications' Whiz Comics #2 by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck. He was reintroduced in Post-Crisis New Earth continuity in Power of Shazam #8 by Jerry Ordway, Curt Swan and Peter Krause.

- C.C. Beck stated that he based the look of Armstrong on Errol Flynn.
- Alan Armstrong is also known as the Defender of Democracy.
