Synopsis for Justice Society of America: "This Is Our Enemy!"
Honorary members Flash and Green Lantern drop by the regular meeting of the Justice Society of America unannounced, and are puzzled by the exuberance of Hawkman and the other Justice Society members over the news that Sergeant Dick Amber was awarded the congressional medal of honor. In a flashback, Hawkman tells the story of their previous case, which started when Carter Hall met with his neighbor Dick Amber. Dick was recently drafted to fight in World War II, but refused to fight, because he couldn't see any point to the war. To persuade him to fight, Carter “arranges” for Hawkman to bring Dick to the Justice Society. The members are unable to convince Dick that there is any point to the war, but their arguing summons the spirit of conscience, who sends Dick back in time to assume the role of a prominent individual in different eras in German history with each member of the Justice Society acting as a passive observer, watching over Dick, only to help in case of danger.
Hawkman accompanies Dick as he assumes the role of a Teutonic Knight. Dick rescues a Polish girl being attacked, but she scolds him and the knights for being war-like and violent. While Dick initially rejects this idea, he changes his mind when the knights slaughter poorly armed peasants. Dick defects to the Poles uses his knowledge of war strategy to help lead the Poles to victory at the first battle of Tannenberg, with the help of the Hawkman. Mr. Terrific brings Dick forward in time where he becomes the cousin of Frederick the Great. Although Dick hates war, he becomes successful in the army. Eventually, he becomes disillusioned with constant wars of conquest and plans to flee the country, but is betrayed by his wife. When the military comes to capture him, Mr. Terrific defeats the troops and allows Dick to escape. Doctor Mid-Nite appears and brings Dick to the Prussian War Academy, where he is training to be an officer. Dick again questions the war-like nature and lack of emotion required by the Prussian Code of War. When a fellow student kills himself because of relentless bullying, Dick challenges the officer responsible for the bullying to a duel. Once Dick gains the upper hand in the duel, he is attacked by the officer's friends, but Dr. Mid-Nite appears and fights them off, allowing Dick to make a fool of the former bully. The Atom leaves Dick pointing a loaded gun at Otto von Bismarck. Dick recalls to von Bismarck how he uncovered that all of the many successful military campaigns he was part of were started by lies. However, because he has seen too much killing, he can not bear to assassinate von Bismarck. Otto immediately calls for his guards, but the Atom storms in and subdues them. Dick gives von Bismarck a solid uppercut, then flees with the Atom. The Wildcat appears and takes Dick to his private chemistry lab, where he his studying to be a German army officer despite his reservations, due to his father's insistence. In the meantime, a political prisoner, trying to reach the Swiss border, collapses at their house, in need of sustenance. Dick's father intends to shoot him immediately, but Dick asks permission to kill the prisoner to prove his loyalty. Taking the prisoner outside, Dick and the prisoner both flee to Switzerland together. Wildcat notices troops closing in on the pair and makes short work of them. Johnny Thunder and Dick arrive at Berlin, between the two World Wars, where Dick is a veteran of the First World War, now disillusioned with the useless slaughter of war. Dick meets up with an old friend, August, who has joined the Nazi party. August tells Dick about all the preparations the Nazis are making for war, which disgusts Dick. When August reports back to the party, they instruct him to kill Dick. Johnny steps in, and despite the Thunderbolt's pleading, Johnny refuses to call for help, and knocks out all of the Nazis. Johnny then brings Dick back to the Justice Society.
After Dick returns, his position is completely changed, and he sets off to join the army, and to share his perspective with others in the army. Returning to the present, all of the members of the Justice Society ponder how to stop wars of aggression. After some discussion, they draft and sign their “Formula for a Lasting Peace” laying out their plan.
