All-Star Comics #33 is an issue of the series All-Star Comics (Volume 1) with a cover date of February, 1947.

Synopsis for Justice Society of America: "The Revenge of Solomon Grundy!"

A bolt of lightning shatters the energy bubble prison of Solomon Grundy, the monstrous enemy of the Green Lantern. Free once more, Grundy treks across the continent seeking revenge on the emerald crusader.

The members of the Justice Society of America arrive for their regular meeting and note Green Lantern’s absence. Evidence of a struggle indicates that Grundy has been in their meeting place. Upon hearing reports of Grundy's rampage on the radio, each member follows a clue to find Green Lantern and stop Grundy.

Hawkman follows Grundy's path of destruction to a small newspaper office. He rescues a man and then tries to get information about what's become of Green Lantern from Grundy, but Grundy gets the better of him. In his struggle to escape, both Hawkman and Grundy are knocked out. By the time Hawkman recovers, Grundy has already gone.

Grundy continues his quest and encounters a group of small boys playing marbles, scarring them away. Acting on a tip from a local farmer, Doctor Mid-Nite follows Grundy's footprints from the marble game into a house which coincidentally is being robbed by two crooks. Mid-Nite is injured in a fight with Grundy, so he uses a blackout bomb to get the upper hand. Grundy escapes, but Dr. Mid-Nite does manage to apprehend the robbers.

Despite the efforts of two women being paid by crooks to misdirect him, Johnny Thunder finds Grundy working with the crooks to rob local stores. Grundy knocks out Johnny with one punch. Hoping to impress the two women (and still clueless to their criminal connections), Johnny goes after Grundy again. After being insulted by Gurndy, Johnny takes him down easily. The Thunderbolt deals with the two crooks. Unfortunately, he also reveals that the Grundy he beat up was only an imposter, who admits he and the crooks were preying on the public's fear to make easy money. The Thunderbolt then insists on helping Johnny track down the real Grundy.

Grundy arrives in a town where the police chief was forced to retire. The new chief flees in terror at Grundy’s arrival. In a last desperate attempt, the old chief crashes his car into Grundy. Arriving on the scene of Grundy's rampage, the Flash saves the old chief but gets hit by Grundy. To save the town, Flash leads Grundy away from it, but then falls off a cliff, enabling Grundy to escape. The town offers the old chief his job back for his bravery.

Desperate for information about Green Lantern, Grundy falls in with a criminal named Baldy Blossom. Baldy agrees to help him, if he’ll help him rob a bank. Grundy agrees. The Atom, meanwhile, is having no luck locating Grundy, until he hears the report of the bank robbery on the radio. He then finds Grundy and Blossom's gang robbing a factory payroll in the same town. Atom easily deals with the men, but Grundy knocks him out cold, then leaves.

Events flash back to Green Lantern at the JSA’s meeting rooms, who was warned of Solomon Grundy's escape by his friend, Doiby Dickles. Grundy arrived at JSA headquarters, and after realizing his enemy wasn't there, destroyed the place in a rage. That was why it looked like a fight had taken place. Trying to save his friends from having to face Grundy, Green Lantern set out charting Grundy's path to intercept him before any other of the Justice Society members were forced to fight the undead behemoth. Finally catching Grundy, the two fought, but Grundy overpowered Green Lantern, holding his head underwater.

Hawkman catches up to Grundy and hits him with a mace, causing Grundy to release his grip on the Lantern. The other members arrive at that point, Dr. Mid-Nite reviving Green Lantern while the other four members work together to subdue Grundy. Although they manage to pin him, they quickly realize even the Justice Society can't hold Grundy for long. Johnny offhandedly asks what the man on the moon would do with Grundy, which inspires Hawkman with a new idea. He asks Green Lantern to transport Grundy to the moon. With no way to return to Earth, Green Lantern and the JSA hope that this time, Solomon Grundy will remain somewhere he can do no harm forever.

Notes

  • The JSA story is reprinted in Super-Team Family #4 and All-Star Comics Archives Vol. 7.
  • Due to time travel shenanigans, Solomon Grundy's chronology becomes a little confusing at this point. The time traveling villain Per Degaton - whom the JSA of this issue haven't even had their first encounter with yet - will journey back in time, rescue Grundy from imprisonment on the moon (as well as enlist other JSA oppponents such as the Monster from All-Star Comics Vol 1 20), and journey back to 1941 on the eve of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Grundy will capture the Flash, Green Lantern and Wonder Woman and then assist Degaton in combatting the fledgling All-Star Squadron in a multi-part story told in Justice League of America Vol 1 193 to All-Star Squadron Vol 1 3. Following the villains' defeat in this adventure, Grundy will be transported back to the moon where Degaton found him. This adventure would be "technically" erased from continuity after Degaton's defeat, but since it also had lasting ramifications like the formation of the All-Star Squadron, its canonicity is debatable. (When returned to the moon, Grundy remarks that he is "back on the moon", indicating that he did remember leaving it.)
  • Grundy last appeared, and was trapped in the energy bubble he escapes, in Comic Cavalcade #13.
  • Grundy returns to Earth for good in Comic Cavalcade #24, Dec 1947.
  • Grundy's gang are next seen in Showcase #55, April 1965.
  • Wonder Woman is not listed as secretary for the first time in this issue.

Trivia

  • The Daily Courier, a newspaper where the first Psycho Pyrate worked, is mentioned as being outstripped by Regis Herald.
  • The old man with Eddie Mark is not the first Psycho Pyrate, although he has a good resemblance.
