Amadeus Arkham is a 19th Century psychologist and the founder of Arkham Asylum. The asylum was inspired by his mentall ill mother Elizabeth Arkham who he assisted in committing suicide. His wife Harriet Arkham and daughter Constance Arkham were raped and murdered by the criminal Mad Dog, who Arkham later killed in treatment. Eventually in the modern day his descendant Jeremiah Arkham would run the asylum. He was also the partner of Jonah Hex during a period when Hex visited Gotham City. Amadeus Arkham was created by Grant Morrison and Dave McKean, first appearing in Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth. (1989)
