HistoryEdit

As a child, Amos Fortune was the leader of a gang of juvenile delinquents. Later, as an adult, he became obsessed with luck, both good and bad, and discovered the existence of "luck glands" that dictate how a person's luck will run. Upon learning how to control these "luck glands" to manipulate his luck, he gathered his old gang and created the original Royal Flush Gang who battled the Justice League on two occasions. Professor Fortune first met the Justice League trying to remove their "good luck" but was defeated. He remained primarily an enemy of the Justice League, and acted as the leader of the Royal Flush Gang, though he abandoned them soon after.

When Parademon blew up the House of Secrets, Fortune suffered injuries, but survived. However, when he joined Scarecrow from escaping Enclave M, he was thrown from the Secret Six's helicopter by Knockout, after calling her lover, Scandal, a "moronic slut."

It seemed that Fortune survived the helicopter fall and masterminded a plot against the JSA using the Wizard as a focusing point for the 'luck magics' - a.k.a. stellaration energy - in order to destroy the JSA, using Wildcat as his mind-controlled pawn (who grew stronger with each victory over a JSA member via the stellaration energy). Vixen and Gypsy helped Stargirl against this plot, given they had faced him before many years ago while on a training mission as then-new recruits on the JLA, alongside the Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, Vibe, and Steel (Vibe and Steel also new recruits at the time), as they fought both the previous and then-new incarnations of the Royal Flush Gang. After freeing Wildcat from Fortune's control, Stargirl added her Cosmic Rod's energy to Fortune's own stellaration energy, causing him to balloon to tremendous size before exploding.

He later set up the Royal Flush Gang again, making major profits by working with Roulette and her gambling operation. The sent out completely new hands and pips after major museums and casinos. Fortune showed no hesitation to kill his own employees, and he killed several via a kill switch in their gear. After the Justice League foiled his operation, Fortune managed to get away. He escaped to a river boat on the Mississippi, where he was shot at close range by the widow of a discarded card, Two of Clubs.

NotesEdit

  • Although this character was originally introduced during DC's Earth-One era of publication, their existence following the events of the 1985-86 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths remains intact. However, some elements of the character's Pre-Crisis history may have been altered or removed for Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, and should be considered apocryphal.
  • JLA Classified #22 establishes that the original Royal Flush Gang were childhood friends and that they adopted their positions within the gang based on their first name initials: Amos = Ace, Kerry = King, Queenie = Queen, Jack = Jack, Tom = Ten.
