Professor Anders Overbeck is a German scientist who worked at the Gotham City Atomic Energy Laboratory. He later invented a brain regulator for the Arkham Institute and briefly became the supervillain The Red Hood while he was under the mental influence of the Joker.

Gotham City Atomic Energy Laboratory

When the Mad Hatter turned Batman's cowl pink with a radioactive spray, the Caped Crusader planned to hand it over to Professor Overbeck at the Gotham City Atomic Energy Laboratory in order to have it decontaminated. The Mad Hatter later trapped Batman and Robin in a fluoroscopic cabinet at the laboratory and left them to irradiate.[1] However, the Bat X-Ray Deflector in the Utility Belt was able to deflect the radiation and Overbeck then assisted the Dynamic Duo in faking their own deaths by providing them with two skeletons that were later found in their place inside the cabinet. Batman and Robin eventually revealed that they had managed to survive the death trap and were ultimately able to defeat the Mad Hatter.[2]

The Red Hood

Batman '66 Vol 1 1 Textless
The original TV series was continued in two different forms: comics and animated movies. This section of the history covers the events of the tie-in comics (Batman '66 (Volume 1) and several crossovers). Part of this may contradict the animated movies Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, Batman vs. Two-Face and Knock Knock, Mr. Joker!.

According to one account of Batman's further adventures, Professor Overbeck later began working for the Arkham Institute for the Criminally Insane, where he invented a brain regulator machine capable of curbing the Joker's evil thoughts. He briefly presented the new system to Batman and Robin when they made a visit to Arkham and were shown around the institute by Dr. Holly Quinn. It was later revealed that Overbeck wore a special red helmet when he used the brain regulator on the patients, which allowed his own normal brain to regulate the erratic thoughts of the inmates. However, when Overbeck attempted to treat the Joker, the system overloaded due to the extraordinarily mad and unstable mind of the maniacal Clown Prince of Crime. The Joker's subconscious was then projected through Overbeck's red helmet and forced him to become the supervillain Red Hood in a scheme to break the Joker out of Arkham. Batman and Robin were later able to recapture the Joker and managed to free Overbeck from the Joker's evil influence.[3]
