"Scratched Out!": Jean Paul is caught by Nicholas Scratch and his cult of followers and they are ready to kill him, but he suggests to Scratch that it would be better if he killed him as Azrael instead of killing just a simple man

Quote1 Ah, you've learned that you aren't always in control of yourself. That your actions can fall woefully short of your intention. Just like the rest of us silly, noble humans. Quote2

Azrael: Agent of the Bat #57 is an issue of the series Azrael: Agent of the Bat (Volume 1) with a cover date of October, 1999.

Synopsis for "Scratched Out!"

Jean Paul is caught by Nicholas Scratch and his cult of followers and they are ready to kill him, but he suggests to Scratch that it would be better if he killed him as Azrael instead of killing just a simple man. Scratch thinks about it and agrees. He tells his followers to tie Jean-Paul up and to beat him to a pulp until dawn, the time when they will execute him.

Batgirl starts taking all of Scratch's weapons from his men and when they notice their missing weapons, it is too late and Batgirl is already gone. Batgirl finds Jean-Paul and tries to free him, but he insists that she play along because he has a plan.

At dawn, Scratch and his men take Jean-Paul and dress him in the Azrael costume he is carrying in his bag, except for the cowl. Scratch then has a change of heart and instead of shooting Azrael, he tells his followers to use bricks from a pile of debris to stone Azrael. Azrael tells Scratch to place the cowl on him as a symbol of victory and when Scratch does so, Jean-Paul transforms into Azrael and breaks free from the ropes tying him up. Azrael stops all the bricks thrown at him and when the people are about to shoot him, Batgirl arrives and disarms all of the armed thugs and takes down all of Scartch's henchmen. Scratch then tells his followers to attack Azrael but they turn their backs on him and start to leave. Azrael calls the people back and tells Scratch to show them how truly a "savior" he was for them. Scratch tells one of the men in the crowd to attack Azrael but Azrael insists that it must be Scratch to do the job. Both of them engage in combat and Azrael beats Scratch with a vengeance. When Scratch is knocked down, Azrael shows the people Scratch's true face and later, he and Batgirl start looking for medical supplies for Dr. Thompkins.

Back at Leslie's, Jean-Paul confesses to her that he enjoyed the violence he used against Scratch and Leslie understands him. Then, both of them start helping the injured people of No Man's Land.
