Azrael is a legacy of religious crusaders and vigilantes passed down since medieval times. They are agents of the Order of St. Dumas, an extremist Christian cult that brainwashes soldiers into trained assassins. In the modern day, Ludovic Valley is known to have passed the mantle onto his son Jean-Paul Valley. Jean-Paul would become an apprentice of Batman and take over for him during the events of Knightfall. There is a splinter sect known as the Order of Purity that developed their own Azrael, wielding the Suit of Sorrows and its twin blades the Sword of Salvation and Sword of Sin. The Purity cult first elected Geoffrey de Cantonna as their protector, but in the modern day this position is taken by Michael Lane. Azrael was created by Dennis O'Neil and Joe Quesada, first appearing in Batman: Sword of Azrael #1. (1992)
