Synopsis for "Batgirl Rising: Point of New Origin, Part One"

Batgirl stops an illegal street race run by the 129th Street Bangers by bodily crashing into one of the cars; the challenger wins by default, and when his attempt to claim his winnings goes poorly, she defends him from the gangsters. The frightened challenger aims a gun at her, but she knocks his gun away with a batarang before leaving to answer a police siren two blocks away. Batman and Robin watch from above and realize work this sloppy can’t belong to Cassandra Cain, but they don’t yet know that the new Batgirl is Stephanie Brown.

Crystal Brown comes off her shift at West Mercy Hospital and wakes up Stephanie with waffles to celebrate the first day of her freshman year at Gotham University. She congratulates her on giving up “that vigilante nonsense,” and Steph has to block her from going into her closet and discovering her Batgirl costume. Steph gets bored in her philosophy class and falls asleep, dreaming about how Cassandra Cain gave her the Batgirl identity.

At the Thompkins Clinic, Leslie Thompkins and Barbara Gordon watch Wendy Harris play wheelchair basketball. Barbara is too angry to accept Leslie’s suggestion that she mentor Wendy, and leaves. On the subway, she fights off three attackers. During their weekly dinner at Caroline’s Diner, Commissioner Gordon says it’s like Barbara doesn’t want to be happy and tries to set her up with a detective who recently transferred in. She is saved by an incoming call from Dick Grayson.

Steph considers whether she should give up vigilantism for good when she hears a call for all units on the police radio. Detective Nick Gage has been taken hostage by a criminal named Rico, who has already shot someone and killed the two paramedics who came to help. Batgirl punches through the window to reach Gage, and together, they fight the criminals. When Rico’s rocket launcher goes off, everybody in the building falls into the river. Gage awkwardly thanks her, but when he doesn’t know which Bat she is, she says, “Unbelievable,” and leaves.

The next morning, Steph once again considers quitting vigilantism after last night's screw-up and she didn’t do her homework either. She goes to the kitchen where Barbara is waiting for her, saying they need to talk.
