Synopsis for "Who Rules the Night"
In the aftermath of their horrific battle, Bane has brought Batman's broken body to Gotham and hurls it from a rooftop to the streets below, to the feet of horrified onlookers. As Bane declares himself the new ruler of Gotham and escapes from police, Alfred, Tim and Jean-Paul are able to rescue Batman and spirit him away to the Batcave. With the aid of Commissioner Gordon, Tim and Jean-Paul retrieve a special medicine to help heal Bruce's damaged spine. As they wait, Tim begins to blame himself for what happened, pointing out a case dealing with Two-Face as the game changer. When Bruce finally comes to, he tells Tim it wasn't his fault.
As Bane continues his stranglehold on Gotham, Alfred and Tim decide to bring in Sondra Kingsolving to help rehabilitate Bruce. At the same time, Bruce realizes there must be a Batman and has Tim send Jean-Paul a Batman costume with strict orders for him not to confront Bane. As Jean-Paul begins his clean-up of Gotham City, Bruce finds himself dealing with something far worse - armed terrorists attack the Drake residence, kidnapping Sondra Kingsolving and Jack Drake. Bruce attempts to stop them, but they take him out and escape. Around this time, the Scarecrow, having long since ended his partnership with the Joker, captures and brainwashes a college class and uses them to help instill fear into Gotham as the new God of Fear. At the same time, Lonnie Machin escapes juvenile detention and redons his identity as Anarky. In the confrontation between Batman, Scarecrow and Anarky, Jean-Paul is pumped full of fear toxin, but the System kicks in, knocking him out of it and enabling him to subdue the two.
At the same time, with the help of Oracle, Bruce has pinpointed where the attackers have fled to - Santa Prisca - and begins to head there himself. As he does, he tells Jean-Paul that the Cave is his to use. Driven by the System, Jean-Paul designs a set of gauntlets and, unable to find Harold, builds them himself. Their creation leads to him and Tim helping save a man's children from Bane's goons and capturing the three, though Tim finds himself being driven out by Jean-Paul's actions. Returning home, Tim finds out that Bruce and Alfred are gone, trying to find his dad. Deciding now's the time to strike down Bane, Jean-Paul breaks out Bane's goons, who lure him to Bane's hideout. Jean-Paul follows and confronts Bane, but the battle is horribly one-sided with Jean-Paul barely escaping. Realizing that Bruce's costume design nearly killed him, Jean-Paul sets out to design a new costume as Bane, badly wounded, hunts down more Venom to prepare for the final battle. As they prepare, Tim is confronted by Dick, who is looking for Bruce. When Tim tells Dick what's going on, Dick's wounded by the decision and disappears.
Soon, Jean-Paul and Bane encounter each other once more, Jean-Paul donning a newly designed costume. Armed with the streamlined armor, Jean-Paul easily battles and defeats Bane, fighting the System long enough to spare Bane. As he leaves, Tim tells Jean-Paul that he does deserve to wear the costume.
