Synopsis for "Book One"
In 1928, the crew of the Argo came to Cape Victoria, Antarctica, and rescued who they could of Professor Oswald Cobblepot's expedition, but Bruce did not find its leader and instead encountered mutated penguins and a reanimated corpse. The crew kept Mister Grendon in a refrigerator, as he mentioned that "the thing" is coming. After they returned to Gotham, Bruce recalled the day, twenty years earlier, his parents were stabbed (by a man who said that "the thing" is coming) to death before he ran up a tower full of bats.
When Bruce, Dick, and Tim arrived at Wayne Manor (while Jason stayed onboard the Argo) before finding Kirk Langstrom's body inside, followed by Jason Blood telling Bruce that the "sins of the father are heaped upon the son", he must "die and become himself", "beware dust come alive again", and "cut out Gotham City's heart in order to save it." Then, Jason transformed into Etrigan and jumped out of a window. Bruce ordered Alfred to place Langstrom inside of his cave before he, Dick, and Tim attended dinner with Oliver Queen. After Oliver told Bruce about Langstrom and his address, he allowed Bruce, Dick, and Tim to stay the night at his residence.
Batman suited up as Batman and investigated Langstrom's residence before taking a paper with his final statement, learning about a book called "The Testament of Ghul." When Talia entered the office of Professor Crosby Manfurd (who possessed the book), Batman intervened before the woman dispatched Daitya. Etrigan also intervened, allowing Batman to follow Talia, who took the book, although she had a creature knock him unconscious before dispatching him for another task. Meanwhile, the Argo frozen in Gotham Harbor, while Grendon, who was wearing a refrigerated suit, uttered "The thing is coming..."
