Synopsis for "The Bird's Last Jest"
Picking up from the last episode, the Dynamic Duo's quick thinking and fast reflexes foil the Penguin's plot and Chief O'Hara is saved. Sometime later, the pair act as his prosecutors at the ensuing criminal trial. There, the Penguin's spirited, self-destructive defense backfires and he is released once more. Batman and Robin's next ploy is to send Alfred to the Penguin's Nest disguised as master forger Quill-Pen Quertch. Once he is there, O'Hara gives him three hours to leave town. Penguin has Chickadee check Quertch’s fingerprints from a waterglass, which Penguin cross-references with his extensive collection of criminal fingerprints. Quertch's identity is confirmed.
Penguin sits down to chat with Alfred. All seemingly goes well until Alfred puts his glasses on. Recognizing Alfred, Penguin gasses the butler to sleep. When one woman takes note of this, Penguin warns that the entire restaurant has been corrupted by Moldavian food poisoning and everyone leaves. Thinking that Alfred was sent by Bruce to rival him in the banking interests department, Penguin orders Chef Blue to whip up a huge pie…
Batman and Robin arrive at the closed restaurant and investigate the kitchen, only to find Alfred's bowler dusted with flour. Back at Wayne Manor, Aunt Harriet gets a nasty surprise when Penguin and his crew show up with a huge pie. Dick calls to check up on her and Penguin demands him and Bruce to return to the manor. Once they get back, Penguin demands a one million ransom for the release of "Quertch". Instead of paying the ransom, Dick and Bruce switch back to their Batman and Robin costumes and the obligatory bat-fight follows suit. Even Alfred and Aunt Harriet join in when Alfred frees himself from the pie, and Harriet conks Chickadee on the head with a vase.
Penguin finally gets his desire to go to the state pen, but as it turns out, his plan was all for nothing. Ballpoint Baxter has been released and will now be teaching penmanship to underprivileged children at a Wayne Foundation camp.
