Synopsis for "The Penguin Goes Straight"

On a Wednesday afternoon in Gotham City, the Penguin, and his lady escort, Mrs. Van Climber, have finished seeing a play when a masked gangster rushes in demanding jewels. He has his eyes set on socialite Sophia Starr, but the Penguin steps in and saves her from what would have been a nasty robbery by knocking the robber out cold. When Commissioner Gordon hears the news, he is surprised and calls Batman and Robin to investigate.

The Dynamic Duo are skeptical that Penguin has reformed and believe that the robbery was staged. After a failed grilling with the gunnman, Batman and Robin soon learn from Lieutenant Coppie that the Penguin was seen entering the steam room of the Millionaire's Club and they race to the steam room to find that Penguin has prevented a kidnapping of the millionaire Reggie Rich, which raises suspicions even more when he gives Batman and Robin his card, telling them that he has established a protection agency. Penguin leaves, but not before telling the Dynamic Duo that he is planning to protect Sophia Starr's jewels from harm.

Back in the Batmobile, Batman and Robin, believing that Miss Starr will not take them seriously if they try to warn her, decide to set a trap by substituting the real jewels with radiated replicas that will allow them to track the thieves. To do this, they enlist Alfred's help. As it turns out, Penguin has not reformed after all and he is indeed planning to get his hands on Sophia's fortune. He explains to his henchmen Eagle Eye and Dove that he is using the protection agency as a front to steal the jewels and valuables of his clients, and of course, another plan to get rid of Batman and Robin. When he visits Sophia, Alfred is there, under the guise of an insurance photographer. He then attempts to switch Penguin's cigarette holder with another one that has a transmitter inside. He does so easily. Unfortunately, Penguin's umbrella picks up the trick one and he soon discovers the ruse. Alfred dashes away.

In spite of this, Batman and Robin are able to replicate the jewels and they head off to Sophia's apartment to switch them out. However, the Penguin and his henchmen catch them and a fight ensues. Sophia also witnesses this and accuses the Dynamic Duo as thieves. The next morning, the dismayed Commissioner Gordon receives a telephone call from Penguin, who invites them to a party at the amusement pier. Gordon then warns Batman not to attend, but he and Robin decide throw caution to the wind by heading to the pier and catch Penguin in a crime so that he will not press charges against them. When they get there, they are knocked out by a cement filled umbrella and Penguin has them hung behind a shooting gallery. At the front of the gallery, Penguin coaxes Commissioner Gordon and Chief O'Hara to take shots at the dummies, in which he will reward them with a check. Little do they know that Batman and Robin are in the line of fire.
