During the event known as "Infinite Crisis", Alexander Luthor, late of the reality once known as Earth-Three, attempted to recreate the Multiverse in order to custom-design his own "perfect" Earth. His efforts in this endeavor failed due in no small part to Superboy (Conner Kent) who heroically sacrificed his life to destroy the tower that would have made such a feat possible. Realizing that his dreams of sculpting the perfect Earth had failed, Alexander decided to take complete control over New Earth. Using his influence over the super-villain team the Society, he decided that the first campaign in his quest to conquer Earth would be to destroy Metropolis. His belief was that should Superman's adopted city fall, then others would quickly follow.
The Society openly declared war on the superhuman community and broke open every Metahuman prison facility on the planet. Scores of super-villains converged in the city of Metropolis with no other purpose than to wreak widespread carnage. News of the attack quickly spread and the heroes of Earth rushed to Metropolis to lend assistance. Ironically, one super-powered individual who sided with the heroes was Black Adam. Having been recently betrayed by Alexander Luthor and used as a mystical battery in his Multiversal tower, Black Adam had no desire to fight on Luthor's behalf and was more than content with satiating his frustration by striking out against his fellow villains. One of the more noteworthy aggressors during the battle was the gargantuan Doomsday. Doomsday's presence was brief however as the Supermen of both New Earth and Earth-Two tackled him simultaneously and quickly took him down. They then used the same tactic to take down Bizarro.
Superboy-Prime briefly entered the fray and attacked Power Girl and Superman of Earth-Two. He soon decided however that this world was lost and that he stood a better chance of rebuilding all of reality from scratch at the center of the universe. The heroes took to the air and battled Superboy-Prime in the sky over Metropolis. Superboy-Prime eluded capture however and flew off. A contingent of heroes, including both Supermen, trailed after him, while the other heroes remained in Metropolis to take on the rest of the villains.
On the ground, Alexander Luthor decided to take a personal hand in matters. He fired an energy blast intended for Batman, but struck Nightwing instead. Fearful that Nightwing might have been killed, Batman went against everything he ever stood for by picking up a discarded gun and firing it point blank at Alexander. Fortunately for both men, the gun was empty. At that moment, a battle-damaged building collapsed to the ground, burying Alexander Luthor. Luthor escaped the rubble, but was killed shortly thereafter by the Joker and the real Lex Luthor.
Within days of the battle, reconstruction efforts were thoroughly underway and people came from all across the world to aid in the relief efforts. A memorial service was held for Superboy and a statue in his honor was erected in Centennial Park.
Issues in storyline are unknown.
- The Battle of Metropolis shuld not be confused with the Battle for Metropolis, or indeed with any of the numerous battles which Metropolis has hosted.
