This arc begins Rucka's run on Detective Comics following his previous work on Final Crisis: Revelations and is followed by the storyline Go.

Synopsis

Batwoman is observed by Batman while she beats a suspect for information on the thirteen Religion of Crime covens in Gotham City. Batman tells her that this is her case, but he'll be watching and ready to help if she needs it. Returning home in the morning, her girlfriend dumps her for being unreliable and her father Colonel Kane helps her go over the night's records. The Religion of Crime has a new leader coming to Gotham, and Batwoman leaves to hunt her down with her father's experimental military weaponry. In the middle of smashing up covens she's interrupted by Alice, who she points her gun at and pulls the trigger.[1] This is shown to be concentrated pepper gas, and Batwoman drags Alice away for questioning. Alice fights back with a razor blade hidden in her mouth, continuously quoting Lewis Carroll. Batwoman is blasted with hallucinogens and has her wig ripped off, sending her stumbling through the woods. Alice finds her at the same time Colonel Kane comes to rescue her, and both groups are ambushed by monstrous Hybrids.[2] This is revealed to be a group of "true believers" led by Kyle Abbot who help both of them escape. Colonel Kane convinces his daughter to rest for a night and go with her step-mother Catherine and cousin Bette to a charity ball. At the fundraiser she shares a dance with Maggie Sawyer who asks for her number, but Abbot cuts in to talk to her again. He explains that he separated from the Church because he believes their interpretation of the Crime Bible is wrong, and has dedicated his life to protecting Kate as his faith dictates. Abbot reveals that Alice has arrived in Gotham to rule it as their mecca, and when Kate calls her father Alice answers to reveal she has kidnapped him.[3] Alice takes Colonel Kane as her hostage to a military base where she plans on stealing a plane to dump poison across Gotham. Batwoman and Kyle Abbot pursue her, managing to defeat Sister Wrack and hijack the plane in mid-air. Colonel Kane is released and pilots the plane safely down while Batwoman wrestles with Alice. Their fights send Alice tumbling out of the plane to her death, but before falling she reveals herself to be Kate's sister.[4]
