Quote1 At some point you're going to start to wonder - - wonder about the difference between us and them. The difference is that they like killing. If any of you ever start to like it, I'll have you out of this outfit so fast you won't know what hit you. Quote2

Synopsis for "Behind Enemy Lines"

Circa 1940-July-10, back in the U.S.A., Blackhawk is reported (on commercial broadcast radio) to be dead, but actually it's Agent Schoener, the plastic-surgically altered Blackhawk-lookalike, who is dead. Blackhawk's big idea here is to impersonate his own impersonator in order to get close enough to Hitler to shoot him. Blackhawk travels to Stuttgart, his disguise and forged documents working well, then arrives in Berlin (in a chauffeured staff car) at nearly midnight. Along the way, he meets a barmaid named Helga in Stuttgart. He also loses his forged documents, and later, she finds them. She immediately departs for Berlin.

Circa 1940-July-11, Blackhawk is stopped at a checkpoint in Berlin, and doesn't have his papers. The sentries arrest and disarm him. Very luckily for Blackhawk, the soldiers escort him immediately and directly to Hitler's own front door, and Hitler is fooled by the disguise. "Agent Schoener" will receive a hero's welcome!

The next morning, out in a Berlin street, Helga catches up to him and returns his fake passport, and they spend the next few hours together, finding themselves very strongly attracted to each other.

That night at a lavish reception in his honor, Blackhawk attempts to assassinate Hitler with a hastily-selected stolen handgun, which turns out to not be loaded, thus fails to gun down Hitler, and escapes.

Synopsis for "Detached Service Diary:, Stanislaus: All the Comforts of War!"

Stan flies to the USSR and meets up with some Russian soldiers, who are starving, and with Marshall Svineena, who is very much not starving. Svineena's pet wolf Lupov eats more and better rations than his troops get. Stan's main point in being there is to tip off Swineena that Allied Intelligence believes that one of his men is a Nazi agent. Swineena just blows him off, so Stan decides to travel along with his regiment. There's an ambush, and Stan can't find Swineena, so he takes charge, but wait, all of the Russians' guns have been jammed! Stan leads them into a narrow defile, as the Germans are closing in, and just then the general and his wolf run onto the scene, also fleeing the Germans. At 300+ pounds, the general is far too fat to fit into the pass, but Stan hides him inside a hastily-piled snowbank.

After the Germans give up and leave, Svineena's men pitch camp, and for once, Svineena is too upset to eat, so his dinner is served to Lupov, who very quickly dies. Stan then sets a trap for the Nazi agent in Svineena's unit, by serving up the rest of the general's food to the troops; the guilty one tips his hand by throwing his ration away.

Notes

  • Russian soldiers like the Blackhawks, who earlier in the war had saved Stalin's life.
