Bruce Gordon is a scientist whose work lead him to be possessed by the evil demon of vengeance Eclipso.

Bruce Gordon was on Diablo Island in the South Pacific to photograph an eclipse. The natives, fearing that he would steal their "sun god" sent their witch doctor, Mophir to stop him. Armed with the tribe's sacred black stone, Mophir attacked and cut Bruce with the gem, but fell off a cliff. Bruce picked up the gem just in time for the eclipse to take place and became Eclipso.[1]

Overview

Bruce Gordon is Earth's leading scientist in the field of Solar Energy, coincidentally the one weakness of the God of Vengeance, Eclipso. As such, the evil Eclipso makes many efforts to distract Gordon and ruin his life by using him as his own physical host, keeping him as busy as possible. [2]Bruce Gordon reluctantly acted as Eclipso's human body for many years, and has recently found himself able to control Eclipso's powers without the mental influence of Eclipso, as long as he keeps his temper in control.

On a certain day, Bruce was trying to get Eclipso under control with help from Mona and Simon Bennett, but during the process they were attacked by operatives of the CYCLOPS crime syndicate, who pulled Eclipso away from Bruce's body. When they learned that Eclipso had been creating chaos in Gotham City, Bruce, Mona and Simon travelled there and contacted Commissioner Gordon in order to help the Gotham City Police Department capture the villain. Working with the local vigilante, Batman, Bruce managed to defeat Eclipso, sending the villain back to his body. Before anybody could start asking too many questions, Bruce and his friends moved away from Gotham.[3]

The Darkness Within

At one point, Eclipso decided to reveal himself as more than just Bruce Gordon's dark side, beginning a plan to destroy the earth by possessing as many super beings as possible to increase his power.[4][5] As this plan was unfolding, Gordon discovered he could use the black diamond to track Eclipso, and also discovered there was more than one diamond. He continued the search for more diamonds as Eclipso continued his quest for more heroes to possess, eventually encountering Superman, who first worked with Gordon[6] and was later possessed by Eclipso.[7]

When Gordon's fiancee Mona Bennett was forced to use a black diamond,[8] Gordon went underground, and began recruiting heroes and scientists to fight Eclipso, blasting them with intense solar energy to ensure he could trust them. His team, consisting of Superman, Doctor Light, The Chunk, Kilowog, Blue Beetle, Zena Moonstruck, Lex Luthor II, Emil Hamilton, and Simon Bennett, succeeded in freeing the heroes from Eclipso's control. Gordon was nearly killed attempting to destroy Eclipso with a solar bomb, but survived in part due to Starman's sacrifice. Gordon was pulled out of the wreckage of Eclipso's body/palace by Lar Gand[9]

Parador

Eclipso survived Gordon's solar bomb and went on take over a drug lord and later the president of Parador, a small South American country. Gordon attempted to recruit the Justice League and the U.S. Government for help. Sarge Steel referred him to Amanda Waller, who agreed to help, first by recruiting Cave Carson to help Gordon and Bennett to infilitrate Parador via its cave systems.[10] They are all captured by Eclipso and knocked unconscious. When they awaken, Gordon and Mona are forcibly dressed in formal wear, and have a dinner with Eclipso where he reveals that he has poisoned cocaine shipments (and broken Cave Carson's legs and dumped him at the border). He then forces them, and the Creeper to ingest black diamonds and releases them, where they are chased through the jungle to the Brazilain border.[11]This was all part of Eclipso's plan, as their escape would make him look weakened. Further, he wanted Gordon to report the tainted cocaine, as it stemmed the drug trade.[12]

An incensed Amanda Waller decides to recruit a task force, dubbed the Shadow Fighters to deal with Eclipso. She has Gordon and Mona lead it, as Eclipso seems reluctant to kill them (because their future time traveling son, Henry Gordon, is the one who freed him[13]). They recruit World War II hero Commander Steel, Peacemaker, The Creeper, Major Victory, an imposter Manhunter, Wildcat II, Doctor Midnight, Chunk, Simon Bennett, Will Magnus, and Nemesis.[14]
