Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew originally appeared as a preview back-up feature in the pages of New Teen Titans (Volume 1) #16. Captain Carrot and his friends appeared last in the pages of Teen Titans (Volume 3).

Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew quickly endeared themselves to a small, but loyal, fan following. Fans were drawn to the comic by the almost slapstick humor that filled the pages of the comic. There were more animal puns than one could count and it was blatantly obvious that the artists and writers were having an incredible amount of fun creating the comic. As noted, the original run of the comic only ran 20 issues, intended to be followed by a "series of mini-series", but were only followed up by the "Oz-Wonderland War", which, while still being enjoyed by fans, failed to keep the liveliness of the original series going.

Captain Carrot has appeared again as backups in current comics (Teen Titans #31) following up on the heros after 20 years of silence. The heros, having problems, have fallen apart and the Captain himself has left his life of heroism for a life of seclusion. The current incarnation of Captain Carrot has little of the whimsical fun of the original, and is a much darker look into the life of animal super-heroes. In fact, the Crew is reunited to solve the actual murder of one of the team's old members, Little Cheese.

Team makeup

There are six members of the "Crew". They all obtained their powers courtesy of an accident involving Superman. For origin story, reference Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew #1.

The members of the team are: Captain Carrot, Pig Iron, Rubberduck, Fastback, Alley-Cat Abra, and Yankee Poodle. A seventh member of the team, Little Cheese, was intruduced in issue #12, but wasn't officially made a member of the Crew until issue #20, which turned out to be the last regular monthly issue of the comic.

Team location

The team are located on an alternate earth populated solely by highly evolved animals with no humans to be found (Earth-C to be technical). Their headquarters is the "Z Building" located near Folleywood, Califurnia.

Issues

  • The character of Pig-Iron has the alter-ego of Peter Porkchops, who was an old comic character from the '40s and '50s, whose nemesis, A. Wolf, also makes an appearance as an unwilling villain called the "Wuz-Wolf" (a wolf who unknowingly turns into a human) in issues 9 and 10.
