Captain Marvel Adventures (Volume 1) was published from 1941 until 1953 by Fawcett Publications. The series spun off from the inordinately successful Whiz Comics, and featured the titular caped hero, Captain Marvel. For the first three issues, the official title of the series was 64 Pages of New Captain Marvel Adventures. In 1941, National Periodical Publications filed a lawsuit against Fawcett citing that the character of Captain Marvel was too similar to their own creation, Superman. The legal battle continued for over a decade, but ultimately the decision favored National Periodical Publications and Fawcett elected to discontinue their entire line of super-hero comics. In 1972 National Periodical (now known as DC Comics) purchased the rights to the former Fawcett heroes, and Captain Marvel and his supporting cast were brought back into circulation.
