From DC Database

Necromancy is a form of divination in which the practitioner seeks to summon "operative spirits" or "spirits of divination", for multiple reasons, from spiritual protection to wisdom. The word necromancy derives from the Greek νεκρός (nekrós), "dead", and μαντεία (manteía), "divination". However, since the Renaissance, necromancy has come to be associated more broadly with black magic and demon-summoning in general, sometimes losing its earlier, more specialized meaning.

One of the more renowned necormancers is the existential hero Christopher "Kit" Freeman, also known as Kid Eternity. By shouting aloud the word "Eternity", Freeman can summon the spirit of any mythological or historical figure and ask them for assistance. A caveat unique to Kid Eternity however, is that he can only use this ability once per spirit. After the spirit in question completes its task, Eternity can no longer call upon them for aid.

Divination is also a common practice amongst those of the Vodun religion in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Necromancer Papa Midnite uses his knowledge of the dark arts to communicate with his dead sister Cedella. To facilitate this, Midnite communes with Cedella through her disembodied skull.

An evil Necromancer named Strega formed a coven of powerful agents known as the Pentacle. She used her powers to perform a necromantic ritual in the town of Riverrock, Wyoming.
