Anodyne is a Catwoman storyline written by Ed Brubaker with illustrations by Darwyn Cooke. It's the debut arc of Brubaker's Catwoman series. This follows Trail of the Catwoman and Selina's Big Score, leading into Trickle Down Theory and Disguises.

Synopsis

Selina Kyle visits Leslie Thompkins for psychological help, at the suggestion of Batman. Returning to her safehouse in East End, she remembers her roots. The prostitutes remind her of when she used to look out for other girls, instead of just acting selfishly. While not in costume, she saves Batman from one of the Riddler's goons. Back in her apartment, she throws out her old purple suit and makes a functional black one from military surplus. Batman asks her about what she'll do next, and explains that he's always believed she is a good person. Selina is surprised when Holly Robinson bursts into the safehouse, as they haven't seen each other in years. Holly, also surprised, reveals that she's gone back to hooking and someone is murdering prostitutes.[1] Catwoman breaks into GCPD Headquarters to investigate bodies in the morgue. It's explained that the police are doing nothing about the murders because prostitutes are considered to be second-class citizens. Selina asks where Holly's been, and Holly explains that she left her convent with Maggie Kyle when Maggie had a crisis of faith. They lost touch after Maggie fell in love with a guy, and both of them believed Selina was dead. Catwoman meets the serial killer on her patrol, but he escapes into a sewer. The cops refuse to help, and Catwoman decides that she will protect the prostitutes because nobody else will speak for them.[2]

Trivia

  • Matt Idelson says that Darwyn Cooke designed Catwoman's new costume. However, the idea came from Ed Brubaker's wife Mel, who suggested putting Selina in a "Mrs. Peel suit with goggles."[1]
