Cavalry Sabre
From DC Database
History
The 1860 Calvary Sabre and the earlier 1840 model was based on the 1822 French hussar's sabre. It was designed for slashing and because of its heavy blade was given the nickname "Old Wristbreaker." It was used during the Mexican War by US cavalry and by both sides during the Civil War, many made by Ames of Cabotville. Due to the large number of swords required many were made in Germany and imported. After the war, many combat veterans and criminals alike continued to use these swords for private use. Famed bounty hunter Jonah Hex continued to carry his military issue sabre for years after his turn of service had concluded. Mexican raiders such as El Papagayo likewise used similar sabres, many of which were confiscated after the Mexican war.
