A master thespian able to assume any number of accents and, through make-up and body posture, imitate the physical identities of others, Christopher Chance is a superior bodyguard for hire. For a hefty price, Chance disguises himself as a client who believes he or she is in danger, and lures their would-be assailants out of hiding, drawing their fire on himself.
When Christopher was still a boy, he witnessed his father's murder at the hands of a loan shark. Christopher tried to save his father by jumping in front of the killer's gun, but the thug brushed the young boy aside and emptied his gun into the elder Chance's body.
Traumatized by his father's death, the young Christopher vowed that no one else would suffer the fear his father did before he died. The young man spent years obsessively studying martial arts techniques and weaponry, training to become a top athlete. He became the ultimate method actor, impersonating others by living their lives. He eventually opened up a special kind of private investigation agency, and hired himself out as "The Human Target".
Eventually the Human Target became addicted to impersonating clients -- even the most unethical ones. He submerged his own personality so deeply that he forgot what it was like. Chance is now incapable of personal relationships, for he is never sure if the emotions he feels are his own, or those of someone he has imitated.[1]Powers and Abilities
