Countdown to Adventure #1 is an issue of the series Countdown to Adventure (Volume 1) with a cover date of October, 2007.

Synopsis for "The Home Front - New Kids on the Block"

Adam Strange goes spelunking on Rann with his friend Shasoth. After an enjoyable afternoon, the two friends complete their task and return to their families.

Back on Earth, Ellen Baker is still concerned that there is an alien woman sleeping in her house. Her husband Buddy (Animal Man) explains to her that the alien Starfire traveled many light years to Earth to bring Ellen Buddy's jacket.[1] Buddy consoles Ellen and tells her that Starfire merely needs to "recharge her batteries".

Later, Buddy resumes his career as a Hollywood stuntman. He stands in for action move hero Steven "Champ" Hazard. After finishing a scene, Champ finds himself the victim of a Zeta-Beam blast that transports him away from Earth, bringing him 60 million light years across space to the planet Rann.

Sardath outfits Champ with a space suit and jet pack and gives him a crash course in Rannian culture. He is priming him to become the Protector of Rann, replacing Adam Strange. Adam discovers this and questions Sardath. Sardath tells him that this will give Adam the ability to spend more quality time with his family.

Sardath learns that Sandswarmer is threatening a local community and the brazen "Champ" Hazard flies off to intercept. Adam trail behind him to keep an eye on Rann's new Protector, and is horrified when he sees Hazard brutally attempting to destroy the Sandswarmer.

Back in San Diego, Starfire finally awakens and comes downstairs. She immediately wins the adoration of Buddy's kids, Cliff and Maxine, but Ellen begins to grow jealous. Buddy returns home and gives Starfire a hug, and Starfire explains that she seems to have lost her powers.

On Rann, Champ and Adam return to the capitol city of Ranagar, and Adam tries to explain to Sardath that Champ is a loose cannon. Champ spins around and punches Adam across the jaw, calling him a relic and threatening to kill him. It becomes obvious that the people of Rann have chosen Champ over Adam, and Strange solemnly walks away.

Synopsis for "Forerunner (Part I) - The Origin of Species"

At Monarch's citadel in the Bleed, Forerunner tells him of her origin, and how she first came to be in service to the Monitors.

Thousands of years ago, her home world Earth-48 was nearly destroyed due to interplanetary war. Representatives from eight other worlds eventually formed a Planetary Combat Treaty and became known as the Nine Houses. They renamed the planet "War World". Disputes between houses were settled by regulated trial combat, the loser of which, would be required to cede territory on their home planet to the victor. After centuries of combat, the wounded left behind evolved and became the Forerunners. The Forerunners were gifted with various physical characteristics passed down from their genetic predecessors. Eventually, the Forerunners returned to the surface and waged war against the Nine Houses. This became known as the Thousand Years War. At the end, the Forerunners proved victorious with only one-hundred of their number surviving.

Years later, a Monitor came to War World and recruited Viza'Aziv to his cause. Viza was one of the youngest and most accomplished of Forerunners. The Monitor told her that she was the chosen one, and she served as his instrument of death until only recently.
