Synopsis for "More Pain Comics, Part VI: Fringe Society"
Kent V. Nelson is at Maddy's bookstore as she explains to him the known history of his mystical helmet. Using the occult history book of World War II, Maddy tells Kent that during the war, there was a group of heroes who operated under the name of the Justice Society of America. One of its members was a man known as Doctor Fate, who once wore the Helmet of Fate. Little is known about him, except for the fact that he was a powerful sorcerer who used to live in a tall tower with no doors or windows. He also had a magical amulet with which he controlled his powers along with the Helmet of Fate. Kent realizes that the pictures of Doctor Fate resemble his own appearance during his battle with the demon Negal, who also happened to address Kent as Doctor Fate. The information is too much for Kent to process at the moment and instead, he starts rambling about how powerless he felt when he witnessed Inza die in front of him as a result of Negal's actions against him. Maddy tries to provide a possible explanation, but since she has never been in direct contact with Negal, Kent dismisses her attempts and bursts out of her bookstore, giving her his address in case there is any new information that might help him.
Kent returns to his motel and he realizes that he has forsaken his duty as litter cleaner for far too long and the place was filled with garbage. Using his magical powers, Kent creates a gush of wind that takes all the litter away before the landlord could scold him for not doing his job. As Kent approaches his room, he remembers the fact that Doctor Fate was supposed to live in a tower with no doors or windows and he decides to test the power of the helmet by getting into his room without opening the door.
As he steps forwards, his body phases through the door, but instead of entering the room, Kent finds himself falling to an abyss of darkness, as the helmet starts changing and he becomes Doctor Fate once again. Once transformed, Kent realizes that he has entered into a hellish dimension in which everything within reach is created with the sole purpose of torturing his mind. Soon, Kent is attacked by zombie-like creatures that resemble the members of the Justice Society of America. The Flash, Green Lantern, Spectre and Hawkman are all out to get him. When Kent finally realizes that the whole situation was created by Negal, a small and dark substance approaches him and Kent recognizes it as the remains of Inza. When he picks the substance in his hand, a portal opens again and as he dives through, he finally lands inside his motel room, not Doctor Fate anymore and still carrying with him the black substance.
Suddenly, somebody knocks on his door with unexpected violence. It is Maddy, who wants to inform Kent about some important information she just recently learned about the Helmet of Fate. However, Kent opens the door and hands the Helmet to her, before rudely telling her to take the object with her and never bother him again.
