Quote1 Yes … queer-looking and shapeless, wasn’t it? Several people are supposed to have been killed here … maybe there’s something to it! Quote2

Synopsis for Alias the Spider: "The Phony Haunted House"

Along the lonely Newburg Road, a pretty girl’s car runs out of gas, and she looks for help at an old abandoned-looking house, but then she sees a mist-like form taking shape, and runs away from it. In the woods she meets the Spider, who has also seen the same thing. They hear a shrill scream, and find Sheriff Mason, from Newburg, dying of a ghastly wound. Mason was unable to get any grip on the insubstantial ghost, but it was able to cut him up at will. Mason dies.

Reluctantly bringing the girl along, the Spider invades the house. A misty shapeless form arises out of the floor. Spider surprises the girl, and at least three thugs, by shooting at a set of colored spotlights, operated from a balcony, instead of at the fake spook, which turns out to be mostly made of steam. The thugs attack. The Spider takes two out, by severing a chandelier’s chain with one of his “Spider Seal” branding arrows, dropping the heavy fixture onto them. Then he climbs into the big room’s balcony and grabs the spotlight operator, flinging him down to the main floor. The first two thugs rally up and pull out guns; the Spider disarms one with a red-hot branding arrow, then jumps in and punches out the other. But behind the girl’s back, a fourth thug steps into the room. He’s Weasel Nolan, the counterfeiter, and he uses the girl for a hostage, at least long enough for another hood to get behind the Spider and knock him unconscious with a blackjack.

The Spider wakes up tied to a post in the basement, and so is the girl. Nolan plans to stick them into the big furnace, one at a time, the girl first. The Spider meanwhile applies his great strength to working his ropes against the rough iron post until he can burst out of them, does so, and beats down all three of the still-standing crooks, then frees the still-unnamed girl.

Synopsis for The Clock: "The Skull Gang"

The Clock invents a paralyzing gun, and Pug simultaneously invents a system for tracking radioactive prints using ultraviolet light. A Skull Gang burglar breaks into O'Brien's home; the Clock paralyzes him; they paint the soles of his shoes with invisible radioactive liquid, and let him "escape," then follow him to the gang's hideout, where after two fistfights the gang is subdued and turned over to the police. The pasty-white ghastly faces of the Skull Gang turn out to not be masks, but an effect from eating small doses of arsenic over a long period.
