History

This mystical crystal ball once belonged to a sorcerer known as Merlin. Whether this version of Merlin is the same Earth-bound mage that once fathered Etrigan the Demon is unknown. The ball was first used when Merlin's native dimension "Magic-Land" was spatially transposed with that of Earth-One. The Justice League of America aided Merlin in fighting against an evil sorcerer and at the end of the adventure Merlin let them keep the magic ball. The crystal ball was housed within the tropy room at the JLA's Secret Sanctuary. A short time later, the League used the ball to communicate across dimensions. They contacted members of the Justice Society of America from Earth-Two who in turn aided them in their struggle against the Crime Champions.

Final Crisis

The Crystal Ball is still located in the Secret Sanctuary by the 30th Century. It is taken by the Legion of Super-Heroes, who use it to contact allies from parallel dimensions. Brainiac 5 activates it with the help of White Witch, and it works, but it is destroyed in the process.[1]

Notes

  • This version of Crystal Ball of Merlin, including all history and corresponding appearances, was initially erased from existence following the collapse of the original Multiverse in the 1985-86 Crisis on Infinite Earths limited series. However the ending of Convergence retroactively prevented that collapse, saving all the alternate realities, though in an "evolved" form. Even though versions of the character may have since appeared, this information does not apply to those versions.
