Dr. Curt Engstrom worked for S.T.A.R. Labs in Keystone City. They obtained Dr. Alchemy's Philosopher's Stone, a stone with the capability of transmuting the elements. The scientific firm shaved off a microscopic portion of the stone, using it for the construction of a miniature medical computer that could go through the bloodstream, transmuting free radicals into iron, curing blood disease. Engstrom stole the computer and the Stone, ransoming them. He was later arrested. They did not recover the computer chip.

Engstrom tried to use Moe "Mouthpiece" Migliani, the famous jailhouse lawyer, to get out. He told Migliani the location of the microcomputer. The lawyer purposely botched the case so he could get his own hands on the chip instead.

Engstrom did escape, however, and using the Philosopher's Stone, he devised a costume similar to that of the original Dr. Alchemy. Calling himself the Alchemist, he went after Migliani in a bank. Police Commissioner Hotchkiss asked the Flash to escort Migliani around, to protect him from Engstrom. However, Migiliani was scheduled to appear on WKEY's Fernando talk show. The Alchemist tracked him there. After temporarily stalling the Flash by turning the nitrogen around him into gold, Engstrom captured Migliani. The Flash followed them, and was able to defeat Engstrom. Wally noticed that the watch that Migliani had given him earlier was not keeping proper time, which clued him that the chip was in fact inside the watch, proving that Migliani had stolen it. So both Engstrom and Migliani were put behind bars.
