DCAU

DCAU is an acronym which stands for DC Animated Universe and is used in reference to characters and storylines from DC's animated movies and television projects. Although primarily used to describe programs that went into production following the 1992 Batman: The Animated Series, it can also be used to describe older shows such as The New Adventures of Batman and the Super Friends. Traditionally, DCAU is used to describe seven specific programs, all of which take place within a shared continuity. Programs that are considered to be part of the "canonical" DC Animated Universe include:

DC Direct

DC Direct is an action figure, statue and poster company directly related to DC Comics. Their name comes from the fact they make DC based action figures and that they ship to comic book shops (the direct market). Originally doing figures based on MAD Magazine, in 1999, the first DC Comics figures shipped.

DC Direct did figures based on MAD Magazine until 1999 when they started making figures of DC Comics characters. In 2001, they released figures of Alfred E. Neuman (MAD's mascot) in clothes based on other DC heroes under the name "Just-Us League of Stupid Heroes" based off comics of Neuman as those heroes. In 2002, the first figures based on characters from Batman and Superman stories appeared. One of these figures was the "21 point of articulation" Superman, one of DCD's best selling figures. Batman got his own line in 2004, with the release of "Hush" figures based on the art of Jim Lee.

DC Implosion

The DC Implosion is the informal yet established name by which fans and other observers refer to the dramatic number of sudden cancellations among DC Comics publications in 1978.

The name is a natural one to choose, since DC had not too long before announced the "DC Explosion", an equally dramatic marketing strategy of publishing more monthly titles and increasing the number of story pages in all titles (accompanied by slightly higher cover prices). Many titles which had been canceled in the 60s and 70s were brought back as part of the "explosion."

After low sales, partly attributed to blizzards in 1977 and 1978 as well as poor quality of the titles themselves, in 1978 National Periodical Publications (DC's owner at the time) ordered that titles with marginal sales be canceled. About 30 titles were canceled, some before they were even published. Much of the work that was unpublished saw print in Cancelled Comic Cavalcade, a 2 issue 'series' which 'published' the work for the sake of copyright purposes. A few titles and works would see print in later series, however.

Shazam #35 ('merged' into World's Finest Comics), Karate Kid #15, and Freedom Fighters #15 were not part of the mass cancellations of the Implosion. These titles were canceled a few months earlier to make room for other titles in the DC Explosion. All three were announced within the comics themselves as being canceled, and unlike Implosion titles, Freedom Fighters and Karate Kid even had ending stories published (though the Freedom Fighters ending continued into Secret Society of Super-Villains, which did fall victim to the Implosion).

Drone

Though most commonly attributed to male members of the Apidae or "Honey Bee" family, drones refer to any technological or organic construct that lacks any sense of free will and is subservient to a greater authoritative body. Zazzala the Queen Bee often employs drone workers who are only quasi-sentient and are completely subservient to her whims. Shock troops employed by the H.I.V.E. were sometimes referred to as Drones, but these agents were still capable of independent thought and action. Automated robotic space vessels are commonly referred to as drone ships.

Drygur

In Pre-Crisis continuity, this was a Kryptonian title determining a rank of leadership. A Drygur presided over laws governing the technocracy along with a congress of concilors known as Molioms. The speaker of the Kryptonian Science Council was often referred to as the Drygur Moliom.

Duploid

A Duploid is a biological clone created through an unorthodox act of fission. Duploids differ from traditional clones insofar that they are usually created through a means beyond that of standard laboratory science. While some duploids may possess independent thought and free will, others are subservient to the parent organism. Duploids are usually created to perform a specific function, upon completion of which, they return to their original state by fusing with their parent body. The super-villain, Multiplex, possessed the ability to spontaneously generate Duploids in his own image. The hero, Impulse, likewise possessed such an ability during his tenure with Young Justice. In the 30th/31st centuries, Luornu Durgo of the Legion of Super-Heroes had the ability to generate duplicates of herself and has been known by several code-names reflecting this power such as Duo Damsel, Triplicate Girl and Una.
