Synopsis for "The Sixty Deaths of Solomon Grundy"

Superman hears reports of Solomon Grundy thrashing about in the Metropolis sewers and goes to investigate. Likewise, the Swamp Thing arrives in the hopes of using Grundy as the template for a cure to his own condition. Grundy and Superman fight, and Swamp Thing tries to prevent Superman from causing Grundy excessive harm. But Swamp Thing's interference is immaterial as Grundy knocks Superman out with a crushing blow.

Superman awakens and gathers some of Grundy's leftover detritus. He takes it to S.T.A.R. Labs for examination and learns that a strange chemical reaction is causing Grundy's cells to reproduce into clone replicants. Before long, sixty Solomon Grundys are terrorizing Metropolis. Jenet Klyburn creates a cure for the effect and Superman destroys all of the Grundy clones.

Notes

  • This story features the Solomon Grundy of Earth-One, not the familiar swamp monster who is usually found battling the original Green Lantern. The Earth-One Grundy is many times stronger than his Earth-Two counterpart, which explains why he is able to level Superman with one punch.
  • Batman makes a behind-the-scenes cameo appearance in this issue.
  • The origin of the Swamp Thing is briefly recapped in flashback in this issue.
