The "DC Explosion" was a marketing term used by DC Comics to introduce a number of new titles. For various reasons, this was followed by a large number of cancellations, referred to as the DC Implosion. However, very few titles were actually released after their "June 1st" explosion date, and three of the four titles only lasted one issue each (two of which were reprint titles). Several stories for the proposed explosion, as well as last issues of several cancelled titles, were published in Cancelled Comic Cavalcade.

Proposed titles that were never published:
According to advertisements, the "DC Explosion" began June 1st, 1978. However, many titles were introduced or re-introduced prior to this, in 1977. Steel was released just prior to this, with a cover date of March 1978. Some characters, such as Isis, Enemy Ace (Men of War), Big Barda (New Gods) appeared on the in-house ads, so these titles were clearly being marketed as part of the explosion.
New Titles Prior to the DC Explosion:
- Black Lightning
- DC Special Series
- Doorway to Nightmare
- Men of War
- Shade the Changing Man
- Star Hunters
The following cancelled titles were re-introduced:
