A travelling salesman, Derek Bradbourne was given a great opportunity to serve his beloved country. As the hero Crusader, he was given strong armour and a stick that produced powerful bolts of energy - his sponsors said that he was to embody all that Britain is and can be. When Thunderbolt based himself in the UK, it was clear to Crusader that this American was overshadowing the good that native British people were doing, so he set out to confront the rival hero. However, he discovered that his armour came from Victor Cypher, who is neither British nor trustworthy. Upon learning the truth, he participated in a mission with Thunderbolt and Checkmate to bring an end to Cypher's activities.
