Detective Comics #640 is an issue of the series Detective Comics (Volume 1) with a cover date of January, 1992.

Synopsis for "The Idiot Root (Part IV of IV) - The Cook, the Bat and the Idiot"

Batman and Zeno return to Rio de Janeiro, where their worst fears are confirmed: the Idiot has already eaten dozens of minds, and imploded their owners' heads once he was finished. Certain victims are left intact, as the Idiot is able to warp from place to place through their empty minds. This leaves the police powerless to stop the Idiot, and Detective De Freitas reluctantly agrees to ally with Batman to fight the monster.

Together with Zeno, Batman investigates Crosby's remaining notes for information on the four patients that compose the Idiot. As they investigate, the pair are ambushed by the Idiot, who devours Zeno's mind before escaping. Despite this, Batman is able to determine one very important thing from the notes: the Idiot's dominant personality is Caesar Lopez, a chef who fantasized about murdering the inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro. But Lopez was also plagued by a crippling fear of birds, and this fear was so strong that even the illusory rainforest he trapped Batman in had none of them.

Batman finds and confronts the Idiot in a busy street, and distracts the Idiot while De Freitas gathers a truck full of every kind of bird possible. As the Idiot catches Batman and prepares to destroy his mind once and for all, Batman summons the last of his strength to open the truck, freeing the hundreds of birds inside. As the birds swarm the Idiot, his phobia tears his consciousness apart, completely disintegrating his body.

Though the Idiot has disappeared from the physical plane, Batman suspects he is not truly dead. He flies back to Gotham as Bruce Wayne the next morning, idly wondering if someone, someday, will eat the idiot root and unlock the Idiot Zone once again.
