Detective Comics #717 is an issue of the series Detective Comics (Volume 1) with a cover date of January, 1998.

Synopsis for "Savage Metal"

Batman stops a theft and knocked the three thieves with ease and making use of the Batmobile; all this while Gearhead watched the action from a nearby rooftop. Gearhead then recalled the memories of his first encounter with Batman that almost cost him his life. Gearhead then remembers about the thugs who took his dying body to an underworld doctor who saved Finch's life by amputating his arms and legs due to frostbite. Dr. Bascomb replaced Finch's missing extremities with robotic parts, transforming him in the human-robot he is now.

Later in his hideout, Gearhead is watching a wildlife TV program that gives him an idea of how to beat Batman. The morning of the next day, Gearhead attends the release of a new technology developed by Drexel Pharmaceuticals. The technology would allow chips to bind to living tissue in order to find any disease faster than any other known procedure. Gearhead asks the exhibitor if that means that a partially mechanichal human was conceivable. The question got the attention of the media and the TV cameras turned to point to Finch to portray him as a concerned citizen. At Wayne Manor, Alfred and Bruce watch the program and the latter figures out that Gearhead might struck that place.

At night while Gearhead gets ready to strike, he remembers that Dr. Bascomb told him that he was giving Finch another chance to get payback over all the people that hurt him in the past by giving him "the tools" to do so. He then starts to climb the Drexel building and enters it seemingly to do something bad. Batman, who had been following him, appears and tries to stop Gearhead but the robotic-man outruns the dark knight and heads to the parking lot of the building where Gearhead assembles with a big car-like structure attached to his waist and directed with his arms. Batman starts to chase Gearhead in the batmobile, much to Gearhead's pleasure as his plan was going smoothly. When the chase led both of them to an empty part of the city, Gearhead released a remote control mini-car directly to the batmobile that disabled all the car's functions and wheels direction. The batmobile crashed into a column and the front part of it was almost destroyed, while Batman was unconscious because of the impact.

Gearhead's plan was successful but he knew that a direct approach, even then, would be a bad idea; so he decided to let some street punks finish the job by destroying the batmobile completely so then he could go and kill Batman.
