Synopsis for "Dead Reckoning, Part Four"

The Mad Hatter is slipped poison during Arkham's dinner hour, sending him into violent, near-fatal convulsions. Inside his meal is another double-marred coin, marking him as Paul Sloan's latest target.

From this and the previous attacks, Batman concludes Sloan's "learning opportunity" had involved Gotham's supervillains, who eventually disfigured Sloan facially as well as mentally. With Catwoman's help, Batman tracks down a likely participant who has remained unscathed - the Riddler, who reluctantly confirms his theory. Eight years ago, Sloan had been brought into an elaborate conspiracy to kill Batman, most of the conspirators confident his acting talents could substitute for Two-Face (who had rejected their plan after a coin toss).

An uneasy Batman convenes with the ex-Commissioner Gordon, who assures him that he bears no responsibility for Sloan's decisions and circumstances. At Batman's request, Gordon then invokes an old favor that grants Batman access to Antarctica's Slabside Penitentiary, so Batman may interrogate the conspirator most responsible for recruiting Sloan in the first place: the Joker.
