Synopsis for The Dragon: "Vengeance For a Doctor"

Red McGraw aka "the Dragon" and his troop of stubborn Chinese guerrillas have been ridding the Honan Valley of plundering Japanese invaders, but they can't be everywhere at once. One squad of Japanese infantry invades the home of an American doctor, who has been treating wounded Chinese fighters. They stab him dead with a samurai sword, and kidnap his attractive daughter, but not before she releases a homing pigeon with a message. The message finds its way to the Dragon, who now knows where to find these enemies. McGraw's 2nd-in-command Chang, and two other guerrillas, drive a captured, repainted, Japanese tank through the hills, in pursuit of the kidnap platoon, with Red and the rest of his troop following on foot. Local Chinese people use semaphore flags to update the tank crew about the escaping column's whereabouts. But the tank is spotted by a Japanese scout, and an ambush is set, and the tank gets set on fire. As they evacuate, Chang is captured alive and his crew is killed. The Japanese torture Chang, with the girl prisoner watching, until the Dragon and his squad arrive, then many of them are killed by McGraw's Thompson gun, and the rest are killed hand-to-hand by the Chinese freedom fighters. The girl has some medical skills and she patches up Chang, then decides to stick around and join up with the guerrillas.

  • Toy Shop of Doom
    • The Toy Merchant breaks the Fourth Wall in the third panel of the second page, addressing the reader directly and reaching across the panel border, to point across the page at one of his victims. Also, he has fangs.
    • A seemingly ordinary man is able to grab Doll Man with one hand and hold onto him. And it takes him a few minutes to recover from being thrown to the floor from shoulder height.
  • Talking Tiger
    • Doll Man breaks the Fourth Wall in the final panel, addressing the reader directly to reassure us that Commander Byrton, "having done no harm" (or, having failed in two different murder attempts plus one high-dollar fraud), is now serving in the U.S. Navy aboard a PT Boat in the Pacific.
    • Professor Byrton refers to a "White Indian legend" about a talking tiger. The Amazon Rainforest in the Quality Universe might or might not conceal a tribe of White Indians, much as the Brazilian jungles of Earth-S do, but Byrton's story is part of an elaborate attempt at fraud, thus is not reliable evidence of its existence.
  • Morgan's Rock
    • Martha definitely does not know Darrel's double identity.
    • At story's end, that U-Boat is still around, but the Coast Guard are on their way.
  • The Mask's Terror Campaign
    • Darrell Dane gets a bullet wound and almost dies. He saves himself by getting small. When he later resumes full size, he is no longer wounded.
  • The Dragon
    • The doctor's daughter who joins the guerrilla band is not named, and does not appear in next issue's story.
  • Also appearing in this issue of Doll Man were:
    • "Lala Palooza" (newspaper strip reprints) by Bernard Dibble
    • Poison Ivy: "The Mighty Mite" by Gill Fox
    • "Big Top" (newspaper strip reprints) by Bernard Dibble
    • "Wise Guy" (text story)

Trivia

  • 1st story, pages 12 & 13: Artist Max Elkan is apparently cribbing panel after panel from that year's Lionel Trains catalog.
