The Dominus Effect is the unofficial title of a storyline that ran in the Superman title series in 1998, starting from the end of the one-shot Superman Forever #1 and continuing on to Superman (Volume 2) #139.

Synopsis

In the first three stories featured in each of the Superman title series, Superman finds himself cast into one of four separate realities, three of which are based on eras of Superman's career in comic book history, as follows:

  • Adventures of Superman – the Silver Age
  • Action Comics – the Bronze Age (Superman of the 1970s, nicknamed "Polyesteryear")
  • Superman: The Man of Steel – the Golden Age
  • Superman (vol. 2) – Superman of 2999.

In all four realities, a little white-haired girl tries to warn Superman that everything is all wrong, without fully saying how. Eventually, Superman realizes that these realities he's in aren't real, but a trap created by an entity named Dominus, who is seeking after the cosmic entity Kismet, who enters into these realities as a little girl to warn Superman. Though Superman manages to break free of the realities and return to the present-time reality he's known, Dominus strips Kismet of her full power and is seen going after Superman in the hopes of gaining all of her power, which he fails in doing.
