Synopsis for "Crawling from the Wreckage"
The Doom Patrol struggles to survive and rebuild after their near destruction during Invasion!. Trying to cope with the deaths of several of their friends, the individual members are reluctant to return to superheroics as they each go through their own struggles.
Robotman has checked himself into a psychiatric ward for trauma. He is heavily depressed. Doc Magnus visits him with the intention of helping him get through this. Although Robotman refuses help, he breaks down mentally in front of the Doc.Larry Trainor is still recovering from his helicopter crash in a hospital bed. His doctor, Eleanor Poole, assures him that he will be healed and ready to leave within days. He receives a visit from the Negative Spirit which is displaying complete consciousness and speaking for the first time. The spirit intends an alchemical marriage, and the Doctor comes rushing into the room... all three of them are engulfed in a great light, and they bond into a single being.
Niles Caulder and Tempest discuss the future of the team while their destroyed Headquarters is being rebuilt. Tempest intends to leave the team, but Caulder wants him to join the new Doom Patrol that he's constructing. He has a big plan, and they're all a part of it.
Elsewhere, a car crash signals something much more sinister. A dying man consumed in the flames from the explosion warns the local authorities of... the Scissormen. It is spooky and ethereal. Two government operatives are sent to investigate... they remark that they will have to call their superiors, who will contact the pentagon, who will contact the President. And then he'll contact Niles Caulder.
Notes
- Doom Patrol: Crawling from the Wreckage is a four-part storyline beginning with this issue.
- This issue takes place after the conclusion of Invasion! in Invasion! #3. Recently, the team has been completely decimated. Paul Kupperberg, the original writer for the series, intentionally used the crossover to reshape the roster. That way the team would be composed of only the characters that Grant Morrison wanted to use. The following characters were written out:
- Celsius was killed by the Alien Alliance.[1]
- Karma left the team because he was on the run from the law.[2]
- Lodestone fell into a coma because of the Gene Bomb.[3]
- Negative Woman was depowered by an invention of Garguax.[4]
- Scott Fischer was killed by the Gene Bomb.[3]
- Robotman also mentions the death of Elasti-Girl. This took place back in Doom Patrol (Volume 1) #121.
- This issue has been retroactively classified as being part of a Vertigo Comics imprint.
Trivia
- Robotman's nightmare at the beginning of the story is a reference to his origin, where his body was destroyed in a race car crash and only his brain was salvageable.
