Synopsis for "Crawling from the Wreckage"

The Doom Patrol struggles to survive and rebuild after their near destruction during Invasion!. Trying to cope with the deaths of several of their friends, the individual members are reluctant to return to superheroics as they each go through their own struggles.

Robotman has checked himself into a psychiatric ward for trauma. He is heavily depressed. Doc Magnus visits him with the intention of helping him get through this. Although Robotman refuses help, he breaks down mentally in front of the Doc.
As a human brain in an entirely robotic body, he has all of the same impulses, but he can't feel anything. He has all of the memories of what physical sensations used to feel like, but this haunts him... constantly aware of his phantom body which isn't there. He still gets headaches, still has primal urges... but there's nothing at all that he can do to satisfy them, to feel like a person again. In the climax of his torrent, he bashes a brick wall to bits with his face to demonstrate that he can't even feel pain anymore. Magnus introduces him to someone who has much worse problems than he does... another patient nicknamed Crazy Jane. Abused as a child, she suffers from dissociation which caused her to develop dozens of multiple personalities. Each of which has their own superpower. Cliff realizes that she is much more in need than he is, and starts a friendship with her to help her out. This allows him to work towards getting over his own personal struggles.
Robotman's breakdown

Larry Trainor is still recovering from his helicopter crash in a hospital bed. His doctor, Eleanor Poole, assures him that he will be healed and ready to leave within days. He receives a visit from the Negative Spirit which is displaying complete consciousness and speaking for the first time. The spirit intends an alchemical marriage, and the Doctor comes rushing into the room... all three of them are engulfed in a great light, and they bond into a single being.

Niles Caulder and Tempest discuss the future of the team while their destroyed Headquarters is being rebuilt. Tempest intends to leave the team, but Caulder wants him to join the new Doom Patrol that he's constructing. He has a big plan, and they're all a part of it.

Elsewhere, a car crash signals something much more sinister. A dying man consumed in the flames from the explosion warns the local authorities of... the Scissormen. It is spooky and ethereal. Two government operatives are sent to investigate... they remark that they will have to call their superiors, who will contact the pentagon, who will contact the President. And then he'll contact Niles Caulder.

Trivia

  • Robotman's nightmare at the beginning of the story is a reference to his origin, where his body was destroyed in a race car crash and only his brain was salvageable.
