Batman Adventures #34 is an issue of the series Batman Adventures (Volume 1) with a cover date of August, 1995.

Synopsis for "In Memoriam"

Spurred by mysterious headaches, Hugo Strange spends six months building a machine that can remove memories and store them inside crystals. By December, the machine is nearly complete, but Strange realizes that only diamonds can handle its stress. Since his bank accounts are empty and his ex-wife refuses to foot his research bill, Strange is forced to resort to common robbery.

Meanwhile, Catwoman tries to pursue a serious romance with Batman, who continues to rebuff her because of her criminal ways. Frustrated, she returns to full-time thievery and tries to steal the world's third-largest diamond, only for Strange to steal it first. Batman is also caught in one of Strange's robberies, during which he receives a personal taste of Strange's new memory-wiping technology.

On New Year's Eve, Catwoman and Batman find and invade Strange's lab just as Strange has completed his machine. In the ensuing confrontation, Batman is struck by the machine's memory-wiping beam; Catwoman, thinking the beam is lethal, quickly destroys the machine and carries the stunned Batman (as well as the diamond) away.

Alone and dazed, Strange stumbles away from the burning lab and into Gotham's city square, right in the midst of the New Year's countdown. To his dismay, the countdown imagery triggers just the memory he had been repressing (thus the headaches), and meant to remove: the murder of his son, David, exactly one year ago.
