Synopsis for "Chapter Four"

In 1794, Ra’s al Ghul and Nyssa conquer a city in Sudan. Ra’s tries to create a new Lazarus Pit, but because Nyssa could not trust the flask of mercury to one of the Ubus during the battle, there is none and she must go to fetch it. On her return, she is stabbed from behind by one of the city’s remaining defenders. Ra’s takes her to the completed Lazarus Pit, where he resurrects her, though he knows giving her another life might one day cost him his own.

Bruce Wayne drinks the potion given to him by Ra’s. He imagines he is a boy again in the alley where his parents were murdered, and he gathers up the scattered pearls of Martha’s necklace, saying he will fix it. His mother tells him it will never be fixed. She shows him that the pearls were fake and tells him to let them go. Now an adult, Bruce says Martha isn’t real. She says she is, and she takes him on a walk through the city to see what’s changed, leaving behind Thomas’s body.

Nyssa and Talia struggle on the walkway over the Lazarus Pit until Nyssa successfully cuts her throat. She kicks Talia’s body into the Lazarus Pit and sends Misha away, so when Talia emerges, she will be the only person Talia sees. When Talia does pull herself out of the Lazarus Pit, Nyssa shoots her. She tells Talia she will die again soon, but unlike Ra’s, Nyssa knows how to use the same Lazarus Pit multiple times. This time, she wants Talia to wonder, as she is dying, why Ra’s would let this happen to her.
