Brother Jonah was an Avatar of The Green in the 13th Century.
History
Actions as Avatar
As the Avatar of The Green, Brother Jonah prevented the persecution of nature worshippers in 13th Century France. He created the invocation of "Sanctuarium Folium Viride" (Sanctuary of the Green Leaf) which allowed those who believed in the Green to be placed under Brother Jonah's protection from the witch trials. At some point during his tenure as Avatar, Jonah met Capucine to whom he also extended this invitation of protection, while she did not take him up on his offer at the time she later approached Alec Holland asking for his protection in the 21st Century.[1]
The Wolf and the Lady
Main article: Swamp Thing: The Sureen
Following Alec's battle with Seeder and the subsequent destruction of the Parliament of Trees; Brother Jonah, Wolf and Lady Weeds are brought from The Green into human bodies. Brother Jonah continues to give advise Alec to direction and about the history of the Green; when The Sureen arrive [2], Jonah tells Alec that most of the history surrounding the sect has been deleted from the minds of the avatar to make their gifts more special. During this time he also reconnects with Capuine who he has not seen for over eight-hundred years and when she and Alec track down Alec's body, Jonah remains at the house to read.[3]
When Alec (in his original Avatar body) and Capucine return from India with Guarav, Jonah and Capucine begin a romantic relationship based upon their 800 year history. During this time, Lady Weeds' plan is enacted and she stabs Brother Jonah mortally.[4] Though Guarav stabilises him, he can not save him and, after a solemn goodbye from Capucine, Alec takes him to the grove in the swamp where the Parliament of Trees once stood and he is absorbed into The Green asking for Alec to continue his book for him, which he could continue to read through Alec's eyes. He also promised to be Alec's regent in the Green, though not his Parliament.[5]

- Brother Jonah has a great fondness for reading books. He was halfway through "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Márquez when he died, he asks Alec to continue so he can read it through his eyes.[5]
