The Captain was a member of the Newsboy Army.

For several years, the Captain spent his late adolescence as a superhero journalist with his friends, the Newsboy Army. He was apparently the strongest and most adventurous of the group, but he became disinterested in their adventures as he got older.

On his intended last adventure before college, he and his friends went to Slaughter Swamp to investigate the Sheeda. There, they encountered the Terrible Time Tailor. The Terrible Time Tailor forced the group to try on “suits,” referring to an artificial change in their fates. The Captain’s fate became “child molester/murderer.” It was strongly implied that he had sexual intercourse with and somehow killed Chop Suzy off-panel. Although he claimed the sex was consensual, his surviving teammates blindfolded him, beat him, and threw him into Ali-Ka Zoom’s magic crate.

Ali-Ka-Zoom later states that the crate contained a “big, deep hole” of some sort. This may have been a portal, which would create the possibility that the Captain became the form of Darkseid seen in Seven Soldiers: Mister Miracle Vol 1.

Chop Suzy would give birth to twins, Lars and Lena, who grew up to become Baby Brain’s assistants. A version of the script of Manhattan Guardian #1 exists that describes Lars and Lena as having African ancestry. This could imply that the Captain was their biological father. However, in the final comic, Lars and Lena have no such familial resemblance to the Captain. It appears more likely that their father was Baby Brain or even the Time Tailor.
